Over 35 Years of Barbershop Excellence
Metro Nashville Chorus was chartered as a Sweet Adelines International chorus in 1971 and has performed and promoted the barbershop sound in middle Tennessee for more than 35 years. We are blessed to be under the direction of Master Director Kim Wonders. There are almost 30,000 women involved in Sweet Adelines, and more than 600 choruses around the world.

Our Region
MNC is part of Region 23, which includes Sweet Adelines choruses and quartets in Tennessee, Georgia, Florida, Mississippi, and Alabama. Our annual regional convention and contest usually takes place in late March or Early April in Chattanooga. Many regional educational events are held in Birmingham.

Our Chorus
Every chorus, like every family, is special in its own way --- our chorus is made of members who are committed to each other and the music we create together. A coach once told us we "sing like we're holding hands" --- with a connection that the audience can feel --- and we try to live up to that with every song. We love to rehearse, we love to compete (click to see our awards), we love to perform...and we'd love you to join us!

MNC is heading to the
2009 International Contest!

Our score at the 2008 Regional Competition earned as a Wildcard spot in the 2009 International Contest that will be held right here in Nashville, Tennessee! The first place choruses in each region are automatically included in the following year's contest, and the top 5 second place choruses in the world are included as Wildcards.

We are thrilled and honored for the opportunity to share the stage with choruses from across the country and around the globe in October 2009. The contest will be held at the Sommet Center (chorus semi-finals are 10/22; tickets available at Ticketron and more information at the Sweet Adelines International site.)

Your eyes don't deceive you - MNC had 33 singers on stage; most the of the International competitors have 60-150 on stage!

Master Director Kim Wonders

Kim Wonders has been an active member of Metro Nashville since 1979. She sang bass in the quartet, “Friendship Factor,” Region 23’s 1983 Quartet Champions.

Kim became the chorus director in 1988, and under Kim’s direction Metro Nashville became Regional Chorus Champions in 1989, competing in the Sweet Adelines International Competition in Salt Lake City in 1990.

In 2001 the chorus competed in the Sweet Adelines International Harmony Classic Competition becoming the Second Place International Small Chorus.

The chorus qualified to compete again in 2002 and won fifth place.

Metro Nashville returned again in 2006 and was named Small Chorus Champions; the win also earned Kim the title of Master Director.

The chorus’ high score at the 2007 regional contest earned a trip to the 2008 Harmony Classic, this time in the Mid-Size division.

At the 2008 regional contest, Metro Nashville qualifed as a Wildcard for the 2009 International contest (where they will compete against choruses 2-4 times their size!).

Kim continues to learn and grow through her active involvement in Regional activities. She recently served for three years as the chair of the Young Women In Harmony program for Region 23. She is a member of the Regional faculty and also coaches quartets and choruses throughout the country.

In Kim’s other life, she is Music Department Chair and Choral Director at Hunters Lane High School. Her very active choral program includes annual Broadway musical productions and performances by the Hunters Lane Madrigals throughout Middle Tennessee and in festivals across the country. She is also teaching in the school’s International Baccalaureate Program.

Since she had a few hours of free time, she accepted an adjunct professor position at Trevecca College in Nashville. She is working with a women’s chorus, Treble Tones. Kim was selected for Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers in 1992, 1996, 2000, 2002, 2005, 2006 and 2007.

As a result of her work in Sweet Adelines at the local school level, Kim was selected to receive the 2005 Sweet Adelines International MENC (Music Educators National Conference) Award.

Your Initial Visit
When you visit an MNC chorus rehearsal, a member of our music team will voice-place you. That simply means she’ll listen to your voice and determine your most comfortable range. Then you join us on the risers, standing next to a member singing the same part: Tenor, Lead, Baritone, or Bass. Descriptions of each part from Sweet Adelines International:

Lead is the melody and is sung in the range between A below middle C, and C above middle C.
Tenor is a harmony part sung consistently above the lead. Although tenor is the highest voice in barbershop harmony, it should not be confused with soprano of conventional singing groups. The tenor should have a light, sweet, pure tone that will compliment but not overpower the lead voice.
Baritone covers approximately the same range as lead. The baritone harmony notes cross the lead notes; sometimes sung below and sometimes above. Baritones must constantly adjust their balance to accommodate their position in the chord.
Bass singers should have a rich, mellow voice and be able to sing the E flat below middle C easily. Basses should not be confused with the alto of conventional groups. Many altos can sing the bass part, but others are much better suited to lead or baritone, depending on range and vocal quality.

How do I learn more about MNC?

What is Barbershop?
Barbershop harmony's four voice parts are called by their traditional names - tenor, lead, baritone and bass – whether referring to men's or women's vocal groups. One of the distinctive qualities of barbershop harmony is that the melody, sung by the lead voice, is below the tenor harmony.

Do I have to read music?
No. About half our members read music, but it’s not a requirement. We learn new songs with learning CDs, recordings of the four parts alone and together. You’ll learn quickly, whether you read music or not.

How often do you rehearse? We rehearse weekly and sometimes add special rehearsals for coaching or upcoming performances.

Will I have to sing alone?
Since our art form requires four parts, we rarely do anything alone! There may be a few opportunities for a soloist to sing a few lines, but most of the time, we sing together and build on each other’s voices. New members even “audition” by taping themselves on the risers during chorus rehearsal.

Am I good enough? Yes! If you can carry a tune, are willing to learn, and have the desire to perform, you have everything you need to succeed at singing barbershop.

What are the benefits of membership?
As a member, the organization becomes yours. The programs are planned by members for members. You’ll discover that the opportunities available through Sweet Adelines International are almost unlimited. Every few years, Metro Nashville invites friends - old and new - to join us for on stage at our Holiday Show.
Holiday Chorus Rehearsal start Tuesday September 30th --- Join in the fun!!

Members of the Holiday Chorus are voice-place into one of the four parts of a cappella harmony, and they share the risers with us at rehearsal for about 8 weeks prior to the show. The Holiday Chorus usually learns 3-4 songs; some participants choose to learn more of the show songs.
You'll join us on stage at our holiday show on Saturday December 6th.

She was a very animated person and you could tell she loved life and loved being a Sweet Adeline. She is a great loss to our organization. Even though there are no words to soften the blow of her loss to her family, there is always the comfort of God's shoulders to cry on and His arms which he now has wrapped around them and which have welcome Vicky into his kingdom. I met Vickie, during my first summer sing-sation, where she presented Mandy Patinkin singing And the Band Played On. I was awed, moved to tears -- as she challenged us -- as you so aptly say, to find the story within ourselves, and to show that story as we sing. Her lessons, her enormous talent, and her "Wonder"ous spirit will live on through all of us that knew her, sang with her, and learned from her. With enormous grief, I send love and healing light to Kim and all of her family--and to the Sweet Adeline family to whom she gave so much.

"Raggedy" Carolyn Benkowitz Song of Atlanta	I cannot come up with words adequate to express my feelings about Vickie's sudden passing. I was so looking forward to sharing a room with her in Hawaii and getting to know her better. She has always been so kind and encouraging to me and, along with my other MNC "raggedy" pals, was instrumental in my decision to stay in this organization at a time when I was unsure. Did I tell her how grateful I was for her friendship? Did I tell her how much I appreciated her kindness? Probably not often enough but I hope she knew how I felt. I will miss her and know that she will be missed by her MNC sisters and her family as well as the Sweet Adeline family that she cared so much about. I don't have a sister but I always felt her warmth and engaging spirit and feel the pain the family must endure at this time. Each summer, the ten best small and midsize choruses compete in 12-15 minute performance packages at the International Education Symposium (IES).

Regional contests are held during the spring of each year to determine the top ten best small and midsize choruses to compete at IES.

On July 19, 2008, MNC competed in the Harmony Classic, an international competition for the top 5 scoring mid-size choruses in the world!
In 2006, MNC was named International Champion for Small Chorus. This year we competed in the mid-Size division (30-60 voices on stage) and we won 1st place! We're the Sweet Adelines 2008 International Mid-Size Champions!
